Using a verizon phone in India

Does Reliance in India activate a phone that has been used on Verizon network here if we provide them with the ESN number. Has anyone tried doing this before.

Verizon phones do work on Reliance network.

3 Months ago, my Verizon wireless phone automatically picked up Reliance signal and I could make phone calls without any problem. Don't remember how much Verizon charged...though.

If you don't remember, is it fair to assume it was not a whole lot??? I'm sure you'd have remembered if it were way too high...at least I would.

OP, I'm curious to hear from others too...so, not much of a help for you.

There are endless number of vendors on ebay who can unlock your phones.

They provide you the unlock code, and detailed instructions, once you provide them the EMI# and your original service/phone name.

The prices range from $5 - $30. The turnaround time is less than a day.

Unlock code for a CDMA phone (remember the discussion is around verizon phones)??? Are you serious? I've never heard of it...not that it doesn't happen.

It looks like Sprint has some kind of a tie-up with Reliance - so, Sprint phones can be used with Reliance Network.

my bad....i thought this was a generic phone unlock question. (GSM)

There are suggestions all over the internet about CDMA phones as well, but nothing that I am familiar with.

I have also tried to find answer to this question on the internet(google)...
It seems although it can be done technically, reliance is refusing to do it.
They will allow only official reliance phones to be used on their network. I guess if you have some connections in the reliance store, you might be able to get it done?

The answer is NO.

On the flip side it is advisable not to go with any CDMA providers in India. I have a reliance ph no and I am going throu' a lot of pain. I bought a Nokia handset last year and the phone has problems right now. You cannot do any business here in India over the phone .... you have to go there personally and meet them. Now Reliance is saying it is Nokia's problem and Nokia is stating that the phone is out of warranty. Even though the phone is < 1 Yr.

The best bet is to go with GSM providers and Airtel in particular. If the phone has problems you can always take out the SIM card and use it in another phone. You can also save all your contacts on the sim card.

So, Instead of getting a Verizon ph, buy an unlocked phone from ebay or Amazon. My 2 cents ...... i mean paisas.
