Last week one of my colleauges at work, decided to quit his job and move back to Spain with his wife for good. When I asked him about his move, he told me that he and his wife discussed (both from Spain) and concluded that by moving to Spain they can be closer to their parents/relatives and pursue their interests. They took this decision in four weeks, will be taking a three month break and then search for jobs. This thought process was kind of refreshing to me. I myself have been thinking of R2I for a long time but cant get around the how much to retire in india/how much is enough/X+1 thinking.
Some of the other chinese/israelis/europeans in my team never even think about going back to their countries. They just want to live here and enjoy whatever this country has to offer. Last year on our vacation to India we were waiting for our domestic flight at Mumbai airport. I looked at the prices of the simple items (coffee/samosa) and was taken aback by them. However I saw many Indians (locals) spending hundreds in the cafe just like that.
I know this is a very small and dismissible sample, but looking at the various threads I get this feeling that Indians living abroad think too much on R2I/money and in general most of the day to day issues unlike people from other countries. Not saying that this is bad but could it be because we have the option of going back and this fact influences our thought process. What if tomorrow India decides that it won't allow NRIs back to India, will these worries still persist or would we forget this R2I thingie and go after the oppurtunities here
Looking forward to your opinions/comments

Indians living abroad think about going back to India and think and think and think...
Indians living in India keep thinking why they have to live in the pollution, crowd, traffic and keep complaining and complaining... Complaining even while pissing on the street corner and jumping the redlight...
We are like that. Doesn't matter where we are!

I think the average NRI in the US is a hard core self made person who has worked his way up. The US system has been a major contributor in taking him where he is. Now he desires to go back to India either to chase an enterpreneuraial dream OR to gel back with his roots OR be with family OR because he never fit in the US socially and emotionally OR because his GC process failed....whatever the reason, going from a world class top notch, cutting edge first world society to an emerging, developing still very very very chaotic India is not an easy decision and if that decision is preceeded by a process of 'analysis paralysis' it is in line with basic human nature.

yaar , kyunki apne ko sochne ki bimaari hai, what if, what if not, kab, kyun, kahan , kaise, kya
doesn't matter where we stay - india or us.
we are confused and will always be confused.. Because we have seen both the worlds and the more we grow, the more security we need..
ghar, gadi, this that..And as we prosper, isolation kicks in and there we are again ...thinking more

Longer we stay in an alien society..... denial, deceit, and rationalization are required to
justify ( to our selves ) why we are here ........and on the other hand the minute we think of
going back to a certified organic 3rd world from this perfectly smooth and orderly 1st
world......more denial, deceit and rationalization have to provide a dream-like high to justify
that generally futile exersice of R2Iing......and after R2Iing....forget it....."why in the holy
name we did this to ourselves?" ......will demand even more of the same denial, deceit and
rationalization......so...in short...we are doomed...to think !

You hit the nail on the head. I have seen people from Thailand go back when they feel like going. Even in Thailand the basic minimum stuff is guaranteed. With these freaking 1+ billion people everything becomes so complicated. When you go from first world, you are going to notice the difference just about everywhere. It is we who collectively failed the system.
Even if to some it seem like it is growing economy and blah but from world standard we are no where. Every freaking thing from Apple gizmos to simple flower basket is made in China. We have the same cheap labor but we couldn't put so many hands to work.

Too much thinking make us indecisive, and can't take decisions.
becoming part of no action due to various reasons we think about, which may or may not happen.
there is a bird (do not know its name) but it sleeps with its feet pointing to sky so that he can catch the sky before it hits him....may be that will be extreme, we are not there yet:p. So keep thinking more and more it does not cost any physical money but takes toll on body with tension, and as Indians we love some thing to worry about, its our biggest time pass, you see:cry:

You nit the hail on the head.
I have seen a total U turn in my relatives since the moment I came to India. Some are jealous, some expect too much...
Frequency mismatch and waht not.
Add to it the traffic(which I thought was manageable), pollution, chaos, dirt, I really think - Why did I do this.
And socially, people have become so isolated that I think, what was bad in US. May be the monotonous life.. Is there some place in the middle :)
