Curious....a question to all who plan to retire at 60 Assuming you may live up to 80 what will you do for the remaining 20 years? stair at the ceiling? gossip? idle talk with friends? Why such a dynamic group of people who crossed the seas to make their fortunes planning to retire at 60?
On another note, do you think friends and extended family will still be in India or in your city when you retire? They may have moved to greener pastures...Have you seen the lives of retirees in India, especially in big cities? Most lead fruitless and bored lives.

Its less about retirement and more about financial independence. In other words you choose what to do, as you have enough to last the rest of your years + leave something for your kids/grand kids.
'Retirement' is different for everyone - maybe a combination of travel + volunteering + reading + other things you wanted to do but never got a chance to. It's more active than the retirement of our parents/grand parents.

Hell! I did not realise that I am leading a fruitless life having retired 9 years back. But it has not been boring.
I do not stair(?) at the ceiling and instead chose to read a book. I do gossip and enjoy it like with a R2I member yesterday, talking idly. But then I did not cross the seas to make my fortune.

Why not vada or Dosa?

Old-Spice2;448241 I think like a pucca Indian, so do not enjoy baseball, football or basketball. Cricket, tennis and soccer are the only games that makes me sit in front of the tv. During the dot com crash, I was without a job for few months and that gave a taste of how retired life will be in US.
A very honest post, but clearly you're not made for the USA is the verdict! I have similar issues, I prefer cricket over football or baseball any day though I do watch NFL and NBA to see if my favorite team makes it into the playoffs. People often tell me that if you don't like football, you don't belong in the USA. I am still trying...
Old-Spice2;448241 Another observation: r2i after retirement does not work in most of the cases. If you spend 30+ years in US you become soft and tolerance level goes down. Moving to India at 60+ and facing the daily challenges will be too much at that age. Even if a fly sits on your nose, you will start cribbing. Many of the retired folks end up LIA and this situation we wanted to avoid. I can not eat the bland Desi food served in Indian retirement home.
There is a solution to this issue, my uncle in LA does it - he stays about 50% of time in India (where he owns a property) and the rest in the US with his kids. But if you're in 60s it will work, when you're 70s maybe it can work, but after that part time India play will become difficult. Also, I am not sure if it can work for everyone, but I am taking lessons from my uncle in his mid 60s.
Old-Spice2;448241 Now coming to the worst part - what happens when one of the spouse dies. Life for the surviving person will be difficult in US. In India there are chances of better support system from siblings or other extended families. Retirement in India is definitely better if you have good savings and you can afford retirement home of higher standard. You can get into spiritual and religious activities. God in India is real, here it is all fake just like Devi Pam Anderson!
Agree 100%, you think like me too on this!
Old-Spice2;448241 With SS income and savings, you can tour lot of places from India. There are tonnes of places to enjoy in India if you know how to.
Agree 100%, many of us haven't seen much of India except a few metros, but India is lot more than those major metros. There are tonnes of interesting places in India and you'll change your impression about India altogether. I believe that...
Thanks for the post!
