Pre-Certified BMW or Merc

Post by pazham »

I always wanted to drive a Merc or a BMW. Was always intriged with their price and Resale value. Does a pre-certified 3 year BMW or Merc make sense in terms of value.

your thoughts?

Most of the repairs and maintenance for these start at 50K miles. So pre-certified for the european luxury brands is questionable. You are better off leasing new one for 3 years that includes all warranty and maintenance (at least in case of BMW last I heard).

I have owned both. BMW is more exciting than Merc. Merc is bland. Maybe the newer ones feel nicer. You probably can negotiate for an extended warranty or buy one which has one.

Lease a new one to enjoy...I would not buy one of these for long term use. I owned a GX-470 and I still miss it (A lot, ) Toyotas definitely take a lot of abuse, they are truly built to last.

One of my friend bought a CPO BMW 328i. He sets aside $2K every year for repairs. It is a money drainer. Lease a new one to avoid headaches. European and American cars are built to last as long as you make the car payment. Once you are done, you can start payment for the technician.

Lexus is like good single malt?very smooth. A 2-3 year old pre-certified Lexus will serve one very well with a huge chunk of initial depreciation paid off by someone else and a 2 year extended factory warranty which you will probably never get to use. Total peace of mind.

But then a Lexus not in the same class as a Merc, BMW or even an Audi when it comes to driving experience. Like others have opined, the way to experience a Merc or a BMW is by leasing a new one. That would come at a premium though.

yes they generally do up to 100k, but it is not bumper-bumper warranty that is for first 50K miles. It is a limited warranty that excludes things that these cars fail on. And then you will have 60k and 90k mile service together running into few grand... I did all this comparison and settled for infiniti g37x as nice compromise between Camry/Accord and BMW/Merc.. Didnt like Lexus. too bland.

The whole pre-certification tag is a scam to draw money. You certainly need to get extended warranty on any Euro car. you dont need CPO for that. You will like the way Beemers handle. Go for it. After 4 years - expect 3 weeks of rental car usage per year on a typical Euro :) The extended warranty will cover the repairs, but you still need to take a break from regular activities to go to the dealer.
