What would be a good age for a kid to read "To kill a mocking bird".... Websites say 12+. Obviously it varies from child to child, but I am wondering if 12 might still be too young....

It is not the reading level that is a block as it has very simple english. It has some mature theme like prejudice, rape, racism and allusion of gay etc and kid won't understand if read below 12 IMO... Most schools in CA make them read TKAM when they are in 8th or 9th (12,13 or 14)..

I agree... it is not the words themselves (Except, maybe a few here and there, like "carnal knowledge of a woman"), but it is the general theme of the book. 8th grade would be 14, and that sounds more appropriate then 12 (6th grade)... Thanks RBee.

If you're looking for interesting books then "Thankurmar Jhuli" is best so for the kids. Don't know there is a English version or not. But much interesting.
