Gandhi's grandson r2ied and in Old Age home now

Post by Plan2010 »

Read this news today and found it interesting and thought provoking from an r2i perspective

http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Delhi/the-odd-gandhi-couple-in-an-oldage-home/article8596901.ece?homepage=true

**************************
They returned to India in 2014, after spending more than four decades in the U.S., and lived in various ashrams in Gujarat before moving to Delhi last week.

..................................

For a long time, Kanubhai and his wife lived in Hampton, Virginia where he worked at the NASA Langley Research Centre. He also worked for the U.S. government?s defence department. ?I used to do research on aircraft wing structures for the fighter planes. So, I had the secret clearances and all that,? he said. Ms. Gandhi, a Ph.D in biochemistry, first taught in Boston and later left the job to do research at the Boston Biomedical Research Institute.
**********************************

Moving to an old age home is not bad, but this couple seems to be in old age home due to circumstances that led to a downfall. They are not comfortable with the current situation, I hope their situation will change for the better soon..

After working for decades in U.S it is quite surprising and thought provoking that they are in this situation. They moved back when they were late seventies - early eighties, probably not the right age to try a transition, but what made them move back? Does the virgina folks here have a clue?

Does yearning to be in India make you lose perspective when you are that old? - point to ponder for unhappily LIA people... :)

Just goes to show that if you are a gujarathi person, you ought to go into business or politics. And not mess with Academia. :wink

It is mysterious how a DINK can be in the USA, for decades, one of them in a plum government job at high enough level, and still end up destitute in old age. Just in that government pension alone, they could have a comfortable life in a US old people home, and have Medicare pay for much of their expenses.

DINK = double income, no kids

I don't think they are in financial problem. Govt pension and two SS paycheck plus savings with no kids will put them in a comfortable position.

Why did they r2i at 80+? Few possible reasons - lack of vegetarian food. Lady is too old to cook, not much option in VA when you don't have car/mobility. No kids to take care of them. Going back to India is the only option. I guess they did not factor in adjustment issue after spending 40 years in US.

For such people happily LIA is only when they are young and working. Once you cross certain age it becomes difficult.

This looks like a business opportunity -- the one that Ms. Gandhi already wants so badly. She is asking ...where are those old-NRI-only, dhokla-serving, clean-toilet maintained facilities ? If they assign their pension checks to some household, they could easily get that, as well as maintain that household in good comfort in India.
The Gandhi brand must be good for something. no ?
