Need to renew US passport while staying in India.

May be dumb question, thought crossed my mind.
Current Status : Minor. US Citizen. Have an OCI. Residing in India.
No plans to travel out of the country (India) in near future.
US passport has expired last month.
Understand it is better to keep a valid US passport handy and have it renewed (unforeseen situations) but is it mandatory? For the stay in India have OCI and U Visa, was expecting US passport is needed for travel. US Citizenship is not coupled to holding a valid US passport.
Any pointers\references\thoughts in this direction?

If you ever need to travel out of India, you will need a valid Passport. An OCI is not a "Passport," but a travel document to supplement a Passport.

Therefore, you should consider renewing your US passport and keeping it active. It can be done at an American Embassy/Consulate

Well, passport is only required for travel. But the OCI sticker on the passport is tied to your passport. What are you trying to do here ? Postpone renewal of passport and reapply OCI ?

-- Irrespective of the stay of younger Kid (minor - US citizen) at india on long term basis, it is your duty to renew the usa passport of your kid prior to expiry date. pl do it immediately.pl. dont jeapordize your kid's (prompt renewal of his passport) at later stage (i.e after his major age of >= 18 years).
