Buyers Beware: Toyota Engine Issue

Post by yugpurush »

This is my personal experience.I have 2002 Toyota Camry and changed oil regularly, suddenly few weeks back "Engine Oil Low Pressure" light came on. Took it to toyota service center and found out that engine has sludge and needs to be replaced with used engine, cost more than $5000. I started searching web since then and found that toyota/lexus engines are sludge prone and toyota quietly settled a lawsuit to pay back for their faulty engines. Unfortunately my car (4 cyl) is not covered and I had to spend from my pocket for repairs. But be aware of the situation before you make your decision about which car to buy. Here are few links that might be useful:

I also have 2004 Camry and it was not covered by recall. Only V6 engines had this problem.

Customers were notified of this problem about an year ago. You should have received a letter in your mail from Toyota stating that you are eligible for a free checkup and replacement at any Toyota dealership.
