Eye Laser Surgery : Health

I am planning to get laser surgery done for my eyes.
-Does anybody know good doctors/clinics
-What is the approx cost
-What are the pros and cons of the surgery

Check with Apollo Hospitals, Opthalmic division. I was there last month for an eye checkup and the person whom we know there was talking about some latest laser surgery machines arriving in Apollo. If you have some kind of health insurance it may be possible to have it covered. I am not sure of the costs. In regards to the pros and cons just Google it. There isn't enough longterm(greater than 10 year) clinical data to assess the risks of such a procedure.Greater than 90% of them seem to be satisfied.

we used services of http://www.lasikindia.com/html/doctorsportfolio.htm 8 yrs back ......number gone instantly.....no issues literally no issues whatsoever in 8 years....in fact it is forgotten that it was done...

cost then was Rs 25k for both eyes incl medicines...now it must be a lot cheaper...

Pros - very easy, painless (only local anasthetia), quick (people used to and even now fly from abroad / other parts of India, get LASIK done in a day's time and fly back after a day), relieves people with high prescription from hassles of glasses / lense, no long leave etc needed, relatively cost effective

Cons - Very long term effects not known, in some cases it may leave very minor over / undercorrection), needs guts - not easy for someone to prepare for the idea that your cornea will be scratched to reshape...

Somebody mentioned that visx equip is very good when compared to lasik. Any idea ?

If you are above 35, then I would not recommend Lasik. Once you cross 40, many people have to go in for bi-focals or reading glass. You will end up wearing glasses after a gap of 5 years. It makes sense when you are in your 20s and chasing girls :)

Dr. Nanda Kishore is a very good opthalomologist. He performs laser surgeries near banjara hills KSR eyewear. (No he does not own the place).
Dr.Kishore has been practicing for more than 2 decades now and is our family doc.

Talk to him. He can direct you accordingly.

I wish Lasik was available when I was in my 20s :emcry: . But for my girlfriend at that time (wife now) contact lens were good enough :emwink:. I am debating whether I should go for Lasik for the last couple of years and couldn't make my mind and I am 33. Contacts are working fine for me and with 10+ years use, got very comfortable with the contact rituals. Are there any side effects of long-term contact lens use?

I would say no. You are on the borderline but it also depends on the health of your eyes. Many older people dont use reading glasses or bifocals. It is hard to predict the condition of your vision 7+ years down the line. With heavy computer and tv usage in modern times, there are chances of vision problem as we age. Stick to contacts.

Thanks Old-Spice2. That's what was my gut feeling for my case inspite of the glossy marketing materials on Lasik. Also Lasik is not time tested on what its impact would be in the long run 20-30 years down the line.

My eye health is just OK consdering I got spectacles for headache in 5th grade, short sight at the age of 17.

Somewhere I read this interesting theory to maintain good eye health. Always focus on a distant object so that the eye lens could adjust the vision especially for people working in closed spaces (read computers etc) where their eye lens is mostly focused on short distanced objects. For every hour, take a break and focus on a distant object (as far as the eye can see, could see through a window) for some seconds. My reading books continuously in summer holidays during my high school years without a break for hours and later devloping short sight fits into this conspiracy theory.

I dont remeber doctor name but we got the eye surgery done for my FIL in 2006 in Apollo. It costed around around Rs.50000 for both eyes.
Doctor was good and experienced.
