2017 NBA playoffs

Post by soxfan »

This maybe the most boring plyaoffs in recent history - still waiting for that shock/surprising result. Almost every matchup is going per script - only minor surprises are Clippers losing to Jazz, and Rockets seeming to challenge Spurs but only to land with a loud thud. Most games are pretty one sided as well - except for some exciting "moments"

As of now, it almost seems like two 12-0 teams meeting in the final (it may not be that bad and spurs/celtics might sqeeze one or two wins but still it feels like GSW and CLE are cruising towards inevitable finals clash).

On a slightly unrelated note - how about that NBA draft :) - feels like its a great time to be Boston sports fan. Pat's agressive post-season moves, Celtics current run and prospects of adding another star or two in next two seasons (thanks to ping-pong ball and that Nets deal), Redsox finally seeming to coming back into contention. It looks promising that coming years will be better for Boston fans - am I jinxing them ?

NBA has always been like that. One or two teams dominant due to one or two superstars. When Celtics, Bulls, Lakers, Spurs, now probably Cavaliers/GSW won titles in a row. Upsets are/were very few and far in between.

Boston/New England sports fans have been very lucky since 2002 as all 4 sports teams(Patriots,Redsox, Bruins, Celtics), have won titles, some teams more than once. Cannot think of another major city in US to have won so much in recent years.

........

That may be true (Bill Russell's and Larry Bird's Celtics; Magic's Lakers; MJ's Bulls; Kobe/Shaq's Lakers dominated for a while) - while there may not be big shockers then, there was at least good competition/drama. I am referring to the period as recently as 2000-13 time - Lebron had to deal with reasonably strong teams that streched eeastern conf finals to some interesting times (2012-13); West conf had multiple strong teams like Spurs, Lakers, Thunder etc. Still miss that tense 2012 eastern conf finals (celtics vs lebron). I feel like only in last 2-3 years - east conf became a one team show and with GSW becoming a super-team, even west conf joined the same state. Or this could be just recency effect - maybe I forgot all those older boring series :)

Warriors enter NBA finals with 16-0 record. No team has done this when best of 7 series format started in playoffs. Can they go 20-0? Don't think so as Cavs will make it tough.

I am pretty sure no team can go 20-0 in playoffs. :)

I meant to write 12-0 and can they go 16-0. No idea why I ended up adding 4 each. Must be my age : ).

Will the best of 7 finals end if 4 wins for one team.

Yes, but they will not allow that to happen since it will be loss in billions. In first 4 games the winning team will lose at least once. This always happens. They will go easy on 4th game. They will rest some key players etc :-)

I sense cynicism. Many say that every professional sports in US is compromised for ratings. When I was in Boston, my neighbor used to say that Super Bowl is rigged, Tennis grand slams are rigged, MLB is rigged to make NYY/Redsox to come to ALCS every year, NBA is rigged to make Lakers reach NBA finals every year. My observations from last 15 years say otherwise.

If ratings and money influence games' outcomes, Warriors would not have swept Spurs 4-0 as prolonging would have helped both cities as both franchises have passionate fans but it didn't happen. I have seen many potential good matchups and expect to go 4-3 but one team gets hot and wins 4-0 or 4-1. If big money markets and TV gods had say, NYY and LA Dodgers should play every year for MLB championship, Lakers and Knicks for NBA and so on. But KC royals won MLB, Cavaliers won NBA last year. Those are very small markets. So drop your cynicism and enjoy the finals. Warriors/Cavaliers is a good match up.
