Here is my story,
Have been in the US for past 14 years, came here right after finishing school in India. Had a successful career in IT and now planning on returning with two young kids (3 and 5 years old). Both myself and wife are in early 30's and are on the same page on moving and are keen on having kids experience indian culture, values, spend more time with grand parents, family etc. Current thinking is to try it out for a few years and see if we can adjust after spending many years staying in US(probably the biggest concern for anyone thinking about r2i, we have taken a few short trips mainly for weddings, vacation etc but nothing that lasted more than couple weeks. The biggest concern is letting go current jobs as longer stay will not be possible for either of us without quitting(sabbatical leave is not an options either).
I am not sure about how finances will look like without income as I am not planning to work right away or at least for a year, i have gone thru a few posts on monthly cost of living for family of 4. Looks like consensus is around 2 lac per month for Pune without rent. We are planning to stay with parents. I can rely on my 20-25k USD per year investment income from my stock portfolio. I feel it is cutting it close in terms of what we need. Is 2 lac per month realistic assumption for cost of living? Do you guys think i can survive on this for at least a year before I start working?
Thanks.

You can talk to your parents and guesstimate other expenses for kids etc. to come up with a realistic number.
2 lac per month seems quite high for a reasonable lifestyle, but that's my opinion.
I know many folks comfortably live with 1 - 1.25 lacs /month of expenses in Pune/Bangalore (US returnees). Your 20-25K USD /year income should meet this number (assuming after taxes).

Listen to this man. He speaks wisely.

It should actually be "tread carefully" but I have already been beaten badly for trying to correct somebody's English here so I too shall take @crazyforger's advice and thread very carefully.

2L per month is above average expense of a typical R2I family. You should be good.

We would probably survive for 4 months in 2L

Thread (verb) is a clever way to say that one has to
[QUOTE]https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/thread
2b : to make one's way through or between threading narrow alleys; also : to make one's way usually cautiously through a hazardous situation
A perfect description of life after R2I.

Threading one's way assumes caution. A tread can be bold or cautious. Hence, the qualifier: "tread carefully". To ask one to "thread carefully" is redundant. It is already assumed I am making my way cautiously through a hazardous situation if I am threading my way through it.

This is very true! There's a big difference between visiting for vacation and weddings (when its all love love love) and moving back for good, dynamics change 180 degrees.
