SSRK;201795I think it is the variety in this forum that adds character besides being transparent which adds credibility. I find this forum to be very informative; though it caters, by and large, to younger people, I wish there are discussions for & from folks who are in my boat--folks in our 50's with grown up kids, nearing or wanting to retire in the next 5-10 years & settling down in India either full time or part time. We are particularly keen on Chennai.
If there are threads already, pl point me in the right direction. If none, would RRK & the Seasoned Gurus [who have been there, done it] consider offering some advice or kick start a group. Like they say, if you build it, they will come. I'm sure there are quite a few folks who would jump in if someone would show them the rope. Many THANKS to RRK et al for such a wonderful job.
thatamericandude;366348I am 52 years old. Been in US for 28 years. Kids are in college, will be completing in 2 years. I got separated from my wife two years ego. In few years kids will settle down with their families. Based on above I am thinking of returning to India and retire, may be when I am 58-60 years. Got any ideas regarding feasibility. I do have around 300K in 401K, I will have pension and after 62 SS. Where are good retiring places? :(

I think its better to rename the thread to something like "thread for Young at Heart" or something explicit. 50+group may look like a group of 50 people retiring in India together :)

Also, folks @ 50 don't need the "Senior" tag, IMVVHO... I mean, the thought that I'm just 20 years away from becoming a Senior, kind of makes me a bit sad :(

I agree that thread title may be misleading but title- thread for young at heart? I am not so sure. Can we have more appropriate, not too creative, as long as the thread title can send the right message about what it is for?

SID, I know 70+ is called senior but folks are talking about retiring in India @30 and hence pushed the limit to 50. I doubt any one of us will even work till 50.
Seriously, this is my genuine attempt to create a thread for retirement in India after working in abroad and kids are settled and not wanting to come back along with parents. They have to settle everything from scrath since some may have missed the boat of buying house and had to live in old age home.
Any right caption that one thinks is appropriate is welcome.
Please help.

I feel "Settling in India after retirement" is good enough. In general retirement means 60+. I go by the definition for 401K penalty free withdrawal and start of SS payment. Govt assumes you are done earning and get ready to live on your savings and pension.
MR,
What do you want to discuss? For folks r2i at 60, they will be healthy for another 10-15 years. So old age home is not an immediate requirement. But living on their own in a new phase of life will throw some challenges related to social networking and family.
Some issues I foresee -
- adjusting to Indian environment after spending 30+ years abroad. Tolerance level may be low.
- our thinking changes as we grow old with all the life experiences
- atheist may realise life is dull and boring without God. During younger days, you were busy in the rat race.
- when people realise they are inching towards the end, they may try to make amends, attend bhajans and visit religious places. In this respect India offers more choice and variety.

Do some of these issues belong in the discussion on religion, philosophy threads ? The 59.5 (401K withdrawl w/o penalty) and 62 (early SS eligibility) are good; however, isn't retirement just the continuation of things with different manners of using one's time, money and whatever else (options) ? Would a title such as "R2I when ___" be suitable, the blank fillable by the age (or some other criterion) of the OP ?

os, as per my conversation with few folks, adjustement didn't seem to be an issue. Most of them were worried about missing an opportunity to buy a home which could have been now used as retirement place. One common opinion was the need of old age homes. Most of them have lost parents and distance between relatives has increased, so no help/support at that front either.
