PIO application by MAIL to CGI-NewYork <- Your input please

Post by Oasis »

Hello PIO holders (CGI-NY, preferred),

I'm planning to apply for PIO card for me and my 2 kids through mail. The list of documents to be sent info., is contradicting b/n the one given when you apply in person and one through the mail. The main confusion is whether we need to send any ORIGINAL passport (USA or Indian) or supporting documents at all, when we apply through mail ?.

I have seen the same question being asked by many in many places but none gives a proper explanation. If you have acquired your PIO through mail, please come forward and share your experience. I have not got any responses from the CGI-NY personnels either by email or by phone.

I'm of the understanding that any of the documents they are asking, I have to take photo copies and get them notarized and send it in mail. No originals to be send in mail, unless they ask for, at later point of time. Please correct my understanding,

Thanks,
Oasis

Yes, Only notarized copies are needed. No need to send originals. Hope this helps.

Thanks Raguraam.

Another weird thing I noticed was that the POI card application PDF file in the following website does not have the question #12. ?!.

http://www.indiacgny.org/documents/piocard.pdf

In fact New York pdf file has lot of details and more structured, when compared to the original file, but for #12. I have sent an email to them. Have to wait and see....

I applied for a PIO card in India for my son, in July 2005. He is below 18, and fee was Rs 7500. No original whatsoever was sent across. Only downloaded form with photo and Draft was sent.

No reply whatsoever till date. Phones busy all time. Only today, someone replied asking to come to Delhi wherever I may be in!

May be I should use RTI act to know status of my application.

Any similar experience?

No need to send any originals. Photocopies that are notarized is enough. The following list is sufficient. Please notarize all copies.

1. Child birth certificate.
2. Child current US or foreign passport.
3. Parents (both) current passport.
4. Marriage certificate of parents.
5. Birth certificate of parents.
6. Utility bill copy.
7. If in U.S driver's license copy.
8. 4 passport photos of child.

Application duly filled and signed by both the parents and there is a place where the child has to sign or if too young to sign then we can do thumb impression.

Hello,

To my surprise, the pdf application in indiacgny.org website has been modified now, to include question # 12. :)

I have one more clarification with regards to the question #14. In that they ask if you or your parents/ grand parents was born & was a permanent resident in India, as on the date of the notification of the scheme i.e., 30.3.1999.

For this question, they are asking for their proof of residence. If I attach their passport, will that be sufficient or do I have to have show their utility bills or ration card, to prove their residence ?.

What did you guys use ?. This is a little tricky question to understand as they are asking lot of details and I want it to do correctly the first time. I have only short time, before the final move.

Appreciate your responses, as usual.

Thanks,
Oasis

I just got a feedback from New York consulate via email that when we send the application for PIO by mail, we should not send original passort of applicant. Only notarized photo copies of passport of applicant should be sent.

Hope this helps.
