MT: All Indian PAN Card questions - Can NRI/OCI/USC apply ? How to apply ?

Post by VRG »

Hi,

I went through few threads regarding applying for PAN but wasn't able to find any post that clearly shows member's experiences for getting PAN while they're in the US.

I understand that there's a website and one can download the form and apply. I want to know other member's experience in this regard. I can think of following three methods:

1) Apply online while in the US
2) Apply in person or through an agent while visiting India
3) An agent (could be relative or a friend) in India will do everything for you

Can other members pls share their experiences reg above? or if there's any other method.

Thanks.

I went to the govt website https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/index.html and downloaded the form 49A for Individuals for myself and my wife. filled out both, and went to one of the closest agents listed in the same website and submitted the forms. the PAN card was delivered to the address in 3 weeks.
The hardest problem was getting the right documents - and thats where the agent helped - since not all documents in my wife's case was easily obtainable because of joint account holding that we had in many cases.
I suggest going through an Agent when you visit India for the least pain.

r2i-bos-bang,

You mentioned "filled out both, and went to one of the closest agents listed in the same website".

1) Did you fill out the forms while you were in the US?
2) I don't see the agent listing, where was your agent (in India or US)?

Thanks.

Just go to NSDL website, fill up the form online, pay thru credit card, print form, attach all required docs & courier. They are very efficient.

I did that after I reached India & received PAN cards in exact 7 biz days.

Thanks aksh.

Actually, I'm based in the US. I'll be visiting India next month for few weeks so planning to do it there if feasible.

I went through the form details but have some concerns:

1) I'll give my India address as residential. Do I have to give my Office address as well (which will be US)? Office address doesn't appear to be mandatory.
2) It requires Identity Proof and Address proof. I have some bank statements delivered to my India address, so I guess I'm ok as far as Address Proof is concerned. But My passport has US address, so don't know what to do for Identity proof?

I just want to make sure that I have all the documents b4 I apply and don't screw up anything while filling out form.

I am trying to apply PAN online from the US. I am having the DD mailed from INDIA; but given the residential address and the address to deliver as US.

I didn't find clear details about the photo to affix. It says 3.5 cm X 2.5 cm; but doesn't mention which is length and width? I couldn't find this info anywhere.

Anybody know this?

If I remember correctly, the office address is required from individuals only if they want office address to be the mailing address and as i recall they had mentioned this in the instructions.

Does the US passport that shows the picture and identifying information now shows address also on that page? My passport does not show address anywhere. I have to fill it in myself if I want to in the space provided.

In any case, your address on the passport should not matter. The residential address is your communications address and passport is only for ID.

Well, if you do screw something up, what are they going to do? Not put you in jail. They will communicate seeking additional or more info, that is all.

The online application format is different than the paper format.

Click on the link below and it will give you an idea of where the picture goes. 3.5 Cms is the height.

Thanks Desi.

I haven't applied for USC yet, so have Indian passport. The address (US) is on the last page as I renewed it in the US.

I'll check regarding the Office Address.

I'm just trying to avoid the runaround that you get dealing with Govt. depts in India. Therefore, would like to make sure that all application docs are in order.

Thanks again.
