OP,
Looks like you are a great movie buff. You are saying you hate indian movies and also hate watching mainstream Hollywood hits
Are you in to 'realistic-world-cinema' coming from France/Italy and other unknown nations?
If so, throw some movie names so that we can fill our netflix online queue . (may be new thread needed for netflix fans)

You will find that a pretty good selection of movies are also available on HBO, WB and other satellite channels. TataSky+ allows you to record them and watch them (skipping commercials) at leisure. There are many non-mainstream ones you will find.
The best solution is to have your own collection especially for movies you may want to re-watch. Nowadays, DVDs are relatively inexpensive esp with advent of Blu Ray. For movies made before 1990, DVD quality should suffice (with some exceptions). You can also try craigslist or ebay for used DVDs.
When we moved five years ago, we were worried about not having the movie experience we enjoyed in the US. Most movies you can find in typical rental stores were the action (with minimal story lines) types. So to plan against it, we started buying movies and adding to our collection in the last six months of our stay. By the time we moved, we had most of the past decades covered.
We top off the list every time we visit the US or buy from Amazon.
You can also buy movies locally but if it is a PAL DVD then they may not play in your US bought system. US made movies on DVD or Blu Ray sold in India also will not play due to region coding. All Indian movies are region free but may be a PAL. E.g. 3Idiots is in PAL which refused to play on my system.
Good movies unlikely to be found in a rental store - I am going to stop with letter A and B. My list has hundreds that would swamp this posting. The following list includes only the rarer movies.

10 to Midnight

Access to good movies?
Hi VWbuggy78,
Would be great if you have a way to store your collection in soft copy in some mp4 or other encoding. Did you try this option?
I used to rip my own dvds and encoded few in mp4 format to have it browse and watch again from my ATV.
Do you know if we can buy good mp4 format movies in India?

VWbuggy78,
Make sense... but i faced many times that DVDs are getting stuck.. So DVDs are not very sturdy and i rather encode to soft copy than loosing but as you pointed out it's really painful process.
I really wish i can buy good encoded softcopy movies.. the movies you download from itunes must be in good quality right?
One moer benefit i see by keeping softcopy is with my ATV, i can browse what movie i would like watch and then play.. with physical dvd, it's not that comfortable :-)

OP:
To answer your question regarding options to rent/buy non-masala/mainstream movies in english or local languages is zero. We lived in Gurgaon for couple of years after our R2I and were able to get decent DVD rentals. But in Hyderabad I am not able to find any such stores/rental clubs so far.
If someone is serious about starting a business, most of the gated communities offer huge customer base and should be enough to sustain with an online catalogue and a delivery boy. This will be opposite of the desi DVD rentals in US :)

Pressed DVDs (not recorded DVDs) have excellent durability. I still have DVDs that I bought in 1998 (the days when the entire Amazon catalog contained only a few dozen titles and when only one store in Boston offered a few rentals). I don't think any disk drive would last that long. I agree that if these were recorded DVD+R (which use chemicals for the recording process rather than physical pits), they would have faded away by now. But printed original ones will last decades. With this collection I never once had a stuck DVD.
If the DVD does not work, you can usually get a free replacement of the same DVD for free from the store.
