How useful is an iphone?

I like the tethering feature of the iphone. I have a 500 meg data plan and I have not come close to using it every month. I like the larger
screen and keyboard of my laptop and to get internet access I tether it to the I phone anywhere where there is a cell signal. Best of all if there is a
wifi nearby then the phone automatically wants to connect to it thus saving the data packet.

Also while on the tether I can use the iphone and check email or other programs while still serfing the net with
the laptop. I constantly watch the data usage option in the iphone to make sure I do'nt over do the data plan but to my surprise
I do not use that much data. Note: I do not watch youtube or look at photos or download programs-I save these activities for when I have wifi
access.

I dont use an Iphone but there is an application, which my friends seem to be using and love it. It is known as "Take me to my car". Apparently, it helps you to locate your car. It lets you save your current position with two taps and lets you get directions to your parking location. It especially helps in Malls, downtowns and large parking lots.

Here is what I would like to do.

I listen to podcasts gotten through itunes and then on to the ipod feature of the iphone. I would also like to listen to music but the iphone will not let me play both. Fair enough. For me I find it relaxing to listen to tabla or sitar music in the background and I have got by by using itunes on my laptop
and then playing music on media player. This gives me both. Then on my iphone I cannot do both. Dose anyone have a program which will alow
me to loop a paricular music track constantly and then overlay it on my podcasts thus giving me a background music while I listen to a podcast (or for future listen to an ebook) while soothing tabla plays faintly.

The feature should allow the volume control of bacground music to be adjusted and also be able to select which music to play.

Please help me to get around this problem.

Its all depends on one's individual needs whether to go for iphone or not. There are plenty of pretty cool apps available on app store for free. I will list just few of them:

Dish network app: You can access your home DVR from anywhere, see the TV listings, record the program you want where ever you are. Is it not cool?
Team viewer: there is one app where you can access your home PC just like remote desktop connection from your iphone.
cdoe reader: bar code scanner to check the item price
calls unlimited: if you are vonage customer, use this to call any number in India by connecting your home vonage - from outside.
Netflix: stream movies to your iphone if you are netflix customer
redbox: rent DVDs
map quest: navigation with voice guidance free app
around me, yellow pages: quickly find what you are looking for- hotel, restaurant, atm, bank, shop etc
banking: BofA, citi apps

and plenty of other apps.

Wanted to share my experience about the usefulness of an iPhone.
I was at an embassy at DC for a schengen visa. The VO asked me for a document which I didn't have at that time and was asked to get it from my new work place. They gave me an email address to send the document. So, while at lunch I emailed to my HR person about the missing document from my phone. In an hour's time, I got that email from him and I forwarded it to the embassy's email address, all while having lunch at the restaurant. I called the embassy 15 minutes later to confirm the receipt and they acknowledged it. At about 2PM, I received another email from the embassy about a clarification and I emailed them back from a rest stop from my phone.
Surprisingly, they approved the application the same day and since I had given them a prepaid overnight envelope and I received my passport this morning.
Smartphone just made my life easy! I LOVE it!

PG, I have realized the usefulness of having a smartphone too...some might say too late. :) I love my iPhone. Its probably the most complete smartphone (may be not the most advanced).

Now one is doing office work all the time while feeling good about the convenience. In office one has nothing to do and one is browsing r2iforums all the time.

Work and fun are all inseparable now. Most of the times, you are doing work when you should have fun and you are having fun when you should do work.
